In our last issue we concluded the listing of Harrimans with some service in the Revolutionary War. The
complete set of articles has been placed on our website. As we examined the
database we were able to extract records for anyone for whom a military record
for that service had been found. Because this year marks the bicentennial of
the War of 1812, we proceed now to present a similar series of Harrimans who served in that war. Due to the number of
names involved only a minimum of detail is given here, but the HFA database
contains a wealth of information for most of the people named and we can
provide that on request.
The first number given is the TMG number, the reference
number used in the database. That is followed by the name and birth and death
dates where known. That is followed by their line of descent form Leonard of
Rowley or John of New Haven.
712 Leonard Harriman (1776- )
Leonard5=>Philip4=>Leonard3=>Matthew2=>Leonard1
PERHAPS the Leonard Harriman (could also be Lemuel/Leonard, #880) who, in the War of 1812, enlisted as
a private, 17 Aug. 1812, for 18 months, in the 11th/21st combined Regiment,
Capt. Jonathan Stark's Co.; marked as deserted 30 Aug. 1813. Lemuel/Leonard's father died in Aug. 1813 and could be a
reason for desertion. On the other hand, it is possible this Leonard (#712)
moved to Ohio as a result of military land grants.
719 Luther Harriman (1793- )
Luther5=>Philip4=>Leonard3=>Matthew2=>Leonard1
From Eaton NH, served in the War of 1812; enlisted 1 Aug.
1812 as a private for 18 months in Capt. John Stark's Co., US Infantry; makes
claim on his service, file #Sur.O 3150, Sur.C 20237; also enlisted 4 Oct. 1814 for 60 days as a
private in Sise's 3rd NH Regt. of detached militia,
Capt. John Willey's Company - his cousin, Robert, was also in this regiment and
enlisted on the same day. He lived in Bartlett, NH in Oct. 1814.

Moses5=>Philip4=>Leonard3=>Matthew2=>Leonard1
Enlisted 23 May 1812 in Capt. Jonathan Stark's Co., 11th
Regt. US Infantry, for 18 months and was made a Corp. He received a pension
after the war (though there is a rejected slip in the microfilmed pension files
for Abigail, widow of Moses Harriman). His brother, Marshall, also served in
Capt. Stark's Co., as did Hazen, Luther and Leonard Harriman.
Extract from "Early Days of Eaton" by Henney: " soon after his
enlistment in May, 1812, 'He having the confidence of his officers.' Moses
Harriman was promoted corporal in Capt. Jonathan Stark's company. In the fall
of 1813 when he was on the same campaign to Chateaugay
with Isiah Forrest, his commanding officer (sic), Lt. J.V. Barron, wrote that
Moses 'was taken sick with the diarrhea or cramp disorder which rendered him
unfit for military duty the remaining part of the time for which he was
engaged. And I further say that said Harriman was a faithful good soldier,
always punctual to duty until taken sick, and he was honorably discharged at
the expiration of his time, November 24, 1813, at Burlington.' From Oct. 8,
1830, until he died Mar. 1, 1836, Moses got a pension of $6 per month."

the 4th US Infantry in that application for a pension; application was
rejected.

only those with the Harriman name were included. The complete listing will be
made available on the website.
Nelson Todd Harriman was discharged from service about three
months before the start of the War of 1812. Born June 2, 1791, in Orland, Maine,
we know little about him, but Clerk Timonier/
Commander Martin, USS Constitution Museum, relayed to researcher Bob Brooks:
“Ordinary Seaman Nelson Harriman transferred to Constitution from [the
frigate] President on 17 June 1810, while both ships were in Hampton
Roads, Virginia. He was discharged at Norfolk, Virginia, on 5 or 6 March 1812.
During his time on board, the ship made one voyage to northern Europe. His
Captain was Isaac Hull.” His brother, Eliakim
Harriman, noted that “He was a large man weighing 230 pounds. The last heard of
him was in the man-o-war Constitution as Captain of the main-top.” A
Captain of the Main Top would be in charge of the sailors tending the main
topsail and would be an “agile and trusted sailor”, although would not necessarily
go aloft himself. We know nothing more of him, although it is possible that he
returned to service when the War of 1812 was declared on June 18, 1812.
